Small rituals that let natural materials age with grace.
Terracotta
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn marks, use a barely damp cloth and let the piece air-dry fully before use. Unsealed terracotta is porous — keep planters on a saucer, and avoid soaking or dishwashers entirely.
Ceramics & Wabi-Sabi Ware
Hand-wash with mild soap and warm water. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on matte and volcanic glazes. Sudden temperature changes can stress the body of the piece, so let it come to room temperature before washing.
Madur Kathi & Sabai Grass
Dust regularly with a dry cloth or a soft brush. Spot-clean spills immediately with a damp cloth and dry in shade. Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight, which brittles the reed, and from persistent damp, which invites mould.
Water Hyacinth & Cane
Vacuum gently with a brush attachment. Once a season, wipe with a lightly damp cloth and dry thoroughly in an airy spot. Rotate rugs and pouffes occasionally so they wear evenly.
Jute
Shed fibres in the first weeks are normal; vacuum without a beater bar until it settles. Blot spills — never rub. Jute dislikes water, so keep it away from wet zones and dry any dampness quickly.
Handwoven Textiles — Kantha, Jamdani, Bhujodi, Chizami
Natural colour is meant to evolve. Subtle variations, tonal shifts and gentle fading are natural characteristics of naturally-dyed textiles. They are not imperfections, but part of the living character of a handcrafted piece. For naturally dyed handloom fabrics, some colour transfer or mild bleeding may occur, particularly during the first few washes or when exposed to moisture. For the first wash always dry-clean. Subsequently can be gently handwashed with cold water and pH-neutral mild detergent. Wash colours separately. Dry flat in shade, and press on the reverse with a medium iron. Never bleach or scrub hard.
Solid Wood
Dust with a dry cloth and treat once or twice a year with a light coat of beeswax or food-safe oil. Keep away from direct heat and radiators. Water rings can be lifted by gently rubbing with the grain.
Lighting & Electricals
Unplug before cleaning. Wipe shades with a dry brush, never a wet cloth. Use bulbs within the recommended wattage marked on the fitting — LED is best, as it runs cool against natural shades.
A Note on Ageing
Clay deepens, fibre softens, wood darkens, cloth relaxes. None of this is wear — it is the piece settling into your life. Care for it lightly and it will keep good company for decades.
